Buying a car ‘as is’ can be a great deal because you get a very low price on the car, but it can also be a problem if you’re not careful. That’s because you never really know what you’re getting when you decide to purchase the vehicle and you could end up with something that isn’t even worth the low price that you paid. As a result, you end up wasting money and then have to purchase another vehicle after you’ve already paid for this one but you can’t use it.
You want to watch for vehicles that look or smell like they’ve been in a flood. If it seems musty that’s a sign that there’s water damage and you definitely don’t want to buy that vehicle. Flooded vehicles are not going to run very well or very long, if at all, but that doesn’t mean that unethical dealers won’t try to sell them to you.
Also, watch for signs that the vehicle has been totaled out. If there are bent pieces under the vehicle or the tires seem bent this is not a good sign and it’s something you’re going to want to investigate more carefully or walk away from entirely.
If the vehicle looks stripped this is generally not a good option either. You don’t know what might have been taken out of the vehicle that may be important to its overall ability to run. Sure you may not think you needed that AC, but you’re definitely going to notice that it’s missing when it’s time to drive in the heat. Other aspects of your vehicle may be even more important and you don’t want to find those pieces missing later on and have to repair the car yourself.
You’re also going to want to look at the mechanics. The car should be drivable even in ‘as is’ condition. You don’t want to get anything that’s not capable of being driven because you’ll find that you need to put a whole lot of money into it. The engine and all required pieces should be there and should be in good enough condition that they’re going to last at least a little while. Otherwise you’ll end up spending even more than the vehicle may even be worth to get it into driving condition and if you can’t drive it you’ll never know what all might be wrong with it until you start putting those pieces in.
No matter what type of car you’re looking at buying you want to make sure that you’re carefully looking it over. The more you know about the vehicle before you get started the better off you’re going toe and the less money you’re going to have to spend in order to get to using it. So make sure you pay attention and make sure that you’re getting a good loan to start out with so you can buy the car you really want.
